1.) Damasio article on sys1 / sys2 formulation and gaming. – Deciding advantageously in a complex situation is thought to require overt reasoning on declarative knowledge, namely, on facts pertaining to premises, options for action, and outcomes of actions that embody the pertinent previous experience. An alternative possibility was investigated: that overt reasoning is preceded by a nonconscious biasing step that uses neural systems other than those that support declarative knowledge… suggest that, in normal individuals, nonconscious biases guide behavior before conscious knowledge does. Without the help of such biases, overt knowledge may be insufficient to ensure advantageous behavior.
2.) The Damasio discussion leads us back to review some of the material from our colleague Bob Patterson article on RDM and immersive environments – ignoring the immersive environments for now and concentrating on the multiple system architecture information provides a complementary view to the Damasio work – ROBUST DECISION MAKING REFERS TO THE ACT OF MAKING SUCCESSFUL DECISIONS UNDER conditions of high variability and high uncertainty (Ullman, 2006). In practice, robust decision making may also include the need for making rapid decisions under conditions of data overload, time pressure, high risk and high stakes, and ill defined or multiple goals

1.) Negative color after effect – yet another demonstration of our sensory systems that lead to perception are not in the business of generating a sys2 representation with high mutual information with the environment – they are designed to provide a stable consistent and useful representation.

2.) Prosopagnosia – face blindness article in the ‘Daily’ this week, interesting snippets from article – Can’t also visualize faces, can still sense emotions, develop strategies to compensate, online test exists.

3.) Last week we were discussing ‘degrees of consciousness’ – ‘levels of intelligence’ – that reminded me of our plenary talk at the World Congress on Computational Intelligence and the paper / chapter we wrote – computing machinery and intelligence amplification – i want to revisit the concepts we presented in that paper – that leads us back to the discussion can we make a machine conscious? – are animals conscious? … and back to the article on a ‘test for consciousness’.

We started this discussion last week and we want to extend it this week to include some of the background on the philosophy of the IIT approach. Since our math cadre has taken a look at some of this material they might have a perspective on it.

A Test for Consciousness – Article by Koch and Tononi – scientific American – Junel 2011, pg 44, – ‘how will we know when we’ve built a sentient computer?’ – proposes several image based test for challenges to current approaches to machine intelligence, focus on integrated information theory (we’ve reviewed before the work of Tononi). We started this discussion last week and we want to extend it this week to include some of the background on the philosophy of the IIT approach.
