Gist – Declaration of victory in Marjah was overly optimistic

commanders were overly optimistic when they predicted quick success last winter in taking the town of Marja from the Taliban… now fledgling signs of a turnaround, but burned by Marja’s unpredictability, the military will be more restrained in forecasting success.. The idea was to develop Marja as a model for counterinsurgency techniques in the hope that other communities would turn against the Taliban… the Taliban have fought back. That has fueled doubts on Capitol Hill and among the American public that the Afghan war can be won… only now starting to take hold in a “persistent” way that allows the government to begin functioning in Marja…
