Meeting material for April 9th

QUEST Discussion Topics and Weekly News

April 9th, 2010

  1.  FYI, Dr. Steven Rogers will be serving as the Keynote speaker at the 5th International Conference on Information Warfare and Security, with Dr. Michael Grimaila serving as the Conference Chair.  Dr. Rogers’ talk will be tomorrow, April 9th, at 9:00 at the Hope Hotel.  The title of the talk is “Integrated human computer solutions for the ‘wicked’ problems we face”.  We plan on doing a sort of wrap-up of the material and any feedback we may receive at the start of this week’s QUEST meeting.  For anyone who doesn’t have an updated copy of the slides, you can either visit the blog and download them or email me directly and I will get them to you.
  2. Another quick announcement, Dr. Morley Stone, Chief Scientist of the Human Effectiveness Directorate, will be hosting another presentation in his guest lecture series tomorrow, 9 Apr 10, 1400-1530, at AFIT’s Kenney Hall.  The guest speaker will be Dr. Adam Russell, program manager for the Tools for Recognizing Useful Signals of Trustworthiness (TRUST) program at the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, College Park, MD.  His presentation, titled “Opening Descartes’ Blackbox: Some Hints About What Human Performance Research Can Tell Us About Useful and Not So Useful Distinctions Between the Physical and the Cognitive,” will look at some research on emerging science in human performance that is unsettling – quite nicely – the traditional categorical distinctions between the “physical” and the “cognitive” domains of performance.  He will focus on research on a few neuro-active hormones and neuropeptides. The seminar is open only to WPAFB personnel; it is not open to the general public. Kenney Hall is Room 2200 of Building 642 in the AFIT complex at 2950 Hobson Way.
  3. We want to review an article by Murray Shanahan on an engineering implementation of Global Workspace Theory – an approach that attempts to blend the two systems (intuition = System 1 = Libet and System 2 = qualia).  The article focuses on anticipation and planning (and use of affect/emotion) but in our discussions we want to extend the consideration to include perception and memory.  You can find the full article here, also if you would like a copy of our internally generated notes on the topic please email me and I will provide.
  4. If there is time, we came across another interesting article this week that we would like to review as a group as well.  The title of the article is ‘Designing Conscious Systems’, by Igor Aleksander.  Anyone interested in reading the article can visit the blog to download a copy, or email me.
